Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease refers to large group of lung disorders characterized by inflammation and scarring that make it hard for the lungs to get enough oxygen. The scarring is called pulmonary fibrosis.

Symptoms

  • Widening and rounding of the tips of the fingers or toes (clubbing)

Occupational and environmental factors

  • Silica dust
  • Asbestos fibers
  • Grain dust
  • Bird and animal droppings
  • Radiation treatments
  • Indoor hot tubs

Diagnosis of Interstitial Lung Disease

  • Chest Xray
  • Blood Tests
  • High Resolution Computerized Tomography (HRCT) scan.
  • Echocardiogram (2DECHO).
  • Pulmonary function tests(PFT with DLCO).
  • Six Minute Walk Distance (6MWD).
  • Arterial Blood Gases (ABG).

Treatment

The lung scarring that occurs in pulmonary fibrosis can't be reversed, some treatments may improve symptoms temporarily or slow the disease's progression. Others may help improve quality of life.
